The UK is making a significant impact at SEMICON Taiwan 2024, with a larger delegation of British businesses eager to explore opportunities in the semiconductor industry. This year, the UK’s participation is led by Dr Dave Smith, the UK Government’s National Technology Adviser (NTA), and brings together 24 innovative companies from the semiconductor sector.

The delegation showcases UK expertise in photonics, quantum technologies, memory, design, and manufacturing equipment, making it an even stronger presence compared to last year’s event. With 15 out of the 24 companies attending SEMICON Taiwan for the first time, the UK is eager to forge new partnerships with Taiwan, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing.

    Strengthening UK-Taiwan Semiconductor Collaboration

The UK’s ambition at SEMICON Taiwan 2024 is clear: to build strong connections with Taiwan’s thriving semiconductor industry. By harnessing the complementary strengths of both nations, the UK and Taiwan aim to boost economic growth in both markets. While Taiwan is renowned for its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, the UK brings a robust research and development (R&D) base and strong commercial expertise, particularly in compound semiconductors.

This year’s delegation builds upon an already successful collaboration between the UK and Taiwan, which includes a joint R&D programme supported by £10 million in mutual funding. The growing relationship between the two nations is crucial for developing cutting-edge technologies that will shape the future of industries such as autonomous vehicles, telecoms, and green energy.

    Opportunities at SEMICON Taiwan

SEMICON Taiwan, a major event in the semiconductor industry, provides an ideal platform for businesses to connect and explore avenues for collaboration. UK companies are seizing the opportunity to introduce their cutting-edge innovations to the Taiwanese market. With the UK Pavilion showcasing leading UK companies, attendees will have the chance to learn about the UK’s capabilities in R&D, compound semiconductors, and photonics.

For Taiwanese businesses, SEMICON Taiwan offers a unique opportunity to tap into the UK’s strengths in advanced technologies and explore collaboration opportunities that could drive further growth in the semiconductor sector. The synergy between the UK’s innovation in semiconductor design and Taiwan’s manufacturing prowess is expected to fuel advancements across various industries, including the push for achieving net-zero targets.

    UK Leading in Compound Semiconductors

One of the key areas of focus for the UK at SEMICON Taiwan 2024 is the development of compound semiconductors. These semiconductors are integral to growth sectors such as autonomous vehicles and future telecommunications. Additionally, they are a driving force behind innovations in green energy, positioning the UK as a leader in developing technologies that contribute to environmental sustainability.

For those attending SEMICON Taiwan, a visit to the UK Pavilion is essential. Here, visitors can discover the UK’s expertise, discuss trade and investment opportunities, and explore possibilities for collaboration in R&D. The event promises to open up exciting avenues for the UK and Taiwan to work together and drive future technological advancements.
